Such a big boy now! Your 4-year-old boy doesn’t look or act much like a baby anymore. After your little boy’s 4th birthday, the developmental milestones make it fun to hang out with your 4-year-old, playing with toys. Four-year-olds enjoy doing new things and become even more creative with their make-believe play. He loves to role play as a parent with a toy kitchen and pretend utensils and food. He knows several colours, letters and numbers, and loves to put together puzzles and play games to test his abilities. He can say some numbers and understands the idea of counting items but may still be working on solving the one-to-one correspondence that counting takes. Number blocks and other counting puzzles help develop these pre-maths skills and build a foundation for STEM studies later on.

One of the biggest milestones with your 4-year-old boy is the understanding of the concept of time. Now, many parents count the number of “sleeps” before an important event. Also, your child likely now tells elaborate stories, some from memory and others from his imagination. Supporting imaginative play with open-play toys helps little boys develop this sort of creativity in a positive way. Many 4-year-old boys love to play board games and card games that are age-appropriate.
